"The
boys worked day and night for this event," said
Maxine, their mother. "We lost most of our
personal savings and had to sell the family camper
just to cover some of the expenses."
Last
year, tragedy struck the Nallys. During a
spectacular growth of their turkey donations, Betsy
and Daniel suddenly lost their father, who suffered
a massive heart attack. "It was tough losing
our dad, who was so supportive of our work,"
said Betsy, now a sixth-grader in Boston. "We
redoubled our efforts, raising enough money to buy
75,000 pounds of turkey to feed over 150,000 meals
in addition to what we had," said Daniel.
"We dedicated this achievement to our dad, who
would have been so proud of us."
Through
appearances on "Oprah" and other TV shows,
the Nally family hopes to inspire other young people
around the country to set up their own food-pantry
operation. "We will keep raising funds until
there is no more hunger in the country," said
Betsy.
The
concert setback has not dampened the Browns' passion
for raising money for breast cancer. Children for
Charity Craft continues to sell musical CDs, jewelry
and books created by the brothers. This spring, they
plan to have their second celebrity auction, where
they hope to raise $10,000, at the St. Laurent
Center near downtown Ottawa. Potential donors will
have the opportunity to bid on T-shirts autographed
by Tiger Woods, shoes signed by Tom Jones, and books
autographed by J.K. Rowling, author of the
"Harry Potter" series. In addition, singer
Loretta Lynn donated her 1959 record "New
Rainbow," which was signed by her. The boys are
also helping other Canadian kids set up their own
charity groups.
The
Browns caution: "Try something that is
manageable when you start your project. Don't trust
what everyone tells you, especially regarding
sponsors and talent. But whatever you do, don't give
up."
Daniel
Nally reflected about his father: "Turkeys R Us
will be a legacy of all the good things he taught
us, such as caring for others."
